Over the years I’ve seen businesses come and go from the world of outbound.

From using my software Uptics.io.

To Coaching/Consulting.

And done-for-you services.

I’ve worked with and serviced 1000s.

And, there was always some reason someone would give up.

But the biggest reason of all:

Results.

But, although results are the core reason, there became an obvious underlying reason why people struggled to get results from outbound:

Process.

Over time, it’s become increasingly difficult to manage cold email campaigns.

It used to be you could grab a lead list.

Write a half-baked email.

Blast emails until you’re blue in the face.

And not experience much:

  • email delivery issues

  • prospect fatigue

But now that cold email tools are so popular, it’s continued to get harder and harder:

  • Email providers have harder Sp*m filters to break through

  • Cold emails don’t pass your prospects “sniff” test as easily

And while Uptics and our competitors Smartlead & Instantly built great products, there was a trend that became abundantly clear.

Our products were only treating “symptoms” instead of curing underlying problems.

So now you’re thinking:

What are the underlying problems?

More times than not, the problem with outbound comes down to a few bottlenecks:

  1. Who you’re targeting…i.e. list building

  2. What you say to them…i.e. copywriting

  3. How you adapt/manage campaigns…i.e. strategy

  4. Scaling up…i.e. volume

The problem with list building

I see most people focusing on outreach to the lowest intent leads possible.

Which are usually from a standard lead database.

Don’t get me wrong, this is fine if you know what you’re doing, how to write copy, how to build the best strategy, and then scale.

But the problem is, most people don’t.

Where many should start is with higher intent lead signals.

Think social engagement topics, job postings, job changes, etc.

The problem with copywriting

Even if list building wasn’t the problem, then there’s the issue of most people not understanding cold email copywriting.

You have a short period of time to capture attention.

Most people don’t do this well.

It requires a ridiculous amount of experience with:

  • frameworks

  • irresistible offers

  • lead magnets

Which requires a lot of testing and trial & error.

Most of which many of you don’t have the time and patience for.

The problem with strategy

Most people build a campaign.

Launch it.

Hope for the best.

Only to be left underwhelmed.

And ultimately give up once they didn’t achieve the result they were hoping for.

The reality is there’s a whole strategy needed to:

  • find relevance with leads

  • find a message that resonates

  • nurture leads long term

Again, many of you don’t have the time and patience for.

It’s too easy to quit and try the next strategy or just revert back to what you know (networking, referrals, and accidental client acquisition).

The problem with volume

As if that’s not enough, even if you did the first 3 things perfectly, most people have a vast misunderstanding of the volume needed to scale.

Whether it’s MORE volume; or

CONSISTENT volume.

It takes:

More.

More.

More.

Whether you’re a small business or a company that has sales reps.

This problem persists in every single company.
